one of my favourite books of all, together with its sequel, Virgin Earth; it tells the story of John Tradescant, gardener to lords and kings in the 17th century, who travelled widely gathering plants and trees. He was responsible for introducing the horse chestnut into England.
the characters are beautifully drawn, and the story is heartwarming and interesting. I pick this up when I can't think of what else to read.
