codepope mentioned that Tom Cruise is doing a remake of War of the Worlds. Leaving aside the horror that this entails, I now have that bloody Jeff Wayne music going round and round my head, not helped by various “friends” on IRC going:

why are elderly drivers unable to reverse? Twice in the past four days, I’ve encountered ancient ones at the wheels of vehicles which, quite plainly, they shouldn’t be driving, as they are pathologically unable to find reverse gear.

keep death off the roads, I say, and ban ‘em all.

high on the list of things you don’t want to hear at 5:05 on a Sunday morning is the sound of the UPSs beeping.

all the power in the house gone off, for a reason we haven’t yet fathomed (which is scarey). So time required to check everything, power it back one by one, then return to bed with a bucket of tea (for me), and an espresso for Pete. And I didn’t really get back to sleep properly.

oops

I passed the aquar^H^H water garden centre today, and popped in to have a look. Well, actually, I popped in to ask where their main (as in not for ponds and stuff) garden centre is. They told me. It was shut by the time I got there.

however, I foolishly stopped to look at the fish, and they had these really cute black koi. Anyone who knows me will know I am fond of black, and so I bought three. I really, really must not impulse buy fish again – the pond willnae take it, cap’n.

but they’re very nice :)

LJ for iPaq? Yes please

of course, sod’s law kicks in just as I get all the AvantGo stuff configured, and LJ goes into read-only mode … why me, lord?

still, it’s an entirely grand gadget .. :)

road safety

this is very nicely done

well, that was easy

install the Palm stuff, and sync the Pilot to the Palm desktop. Install PocketMirror and sync the Pilot to Outlook XP. Install MS ActiveSync and sync the iPaq to Outlook.

no pain, no worries, no problems – just software working like it should, and so rarely does. I am seriously impressed.

and no, latexiron, I won’t come and do yours now!

decisions, decisions

so, last night I finally got round to vaping my W2K install, and putting XP Pro on my main workstation. Not an upgrade, oh no – a new install. So am in the process of installing hundreds of bloody applications, finding CDs, registration numbers, shareware progs, etc.

and in the middle of all this, my iPaq arrives. And I have to get four years’ worth of data off the Palm and on to the iPaq and I don’t have any of their apps installed yet, and I ought to be doing work for clients, and it’s a new toy, and and ….

I found it interesting what order I did start re-installing, though – first off was mIRC; can’t be too far away from techie friends when you’re building a new OS. Then a complete Office XP, on the basis that it would be good to get the reboots out of the way early.

then Mozilla, so I could read my mail,. Then Ameol for CIX, and The Bat! for POP3 mail, and Putty to see what was going on on the web server.

this morning I remembered that a virus checker might be a good idea, so did that, and am now soldiering on with sundry bits and bobs. And the iPaq is calling to me …
